Where to Mount a Speaker in an RC Truck: Bed, Roll Cage, or Body
A speaker that sounds thin usually isn't a bad speaker. It's a well-made speaker in a bad spot. Here's how each mounting location actually behaves, and what to watch for.
The three rules
Before location, three things decide whether it sounds good:
- The drivers need a clear path out. Anything solid directly in front of a driver kills the top end.
- The box needs to be held firmly. A speaker that can buzz against a mount will buzz, and you'll hear it as distortion.
- Don't seal it into a metal box. Metal on all sides muffles the audio and blocks Bluetooth at the same time.
Truck bed - the best all-rounder
If your rig has a bed, this is almost always the answer.
Why it works: the drivers point up into open air, the mass sits low between the axles so it costs you nothing in stability, and there's a clear path for Bluetooth.
How to do it: mount on the bed floor rather than up on the rails, and position the box over or slightly ahead of the rear axle line rather than at the very back. Weight behind the rear axle acts on a lever and lightens your front end on climbs.
Fixing: double-sided VHB tape holds well for lighter models. For anything over about 100 g, or if you run hard, add a strap or two small brackets. Servo tape alone will let a 165 g box work loose eventually.

Roll cage - good for sound, watch the weight
A cage puts the drivers higher and gives them a genuinely clear path, so projection is the best of any location.
The catch: it's also the worst place for mass. Mid-cage height is fine up to about 85 g on a 1/10 crawler. Above that you'll feel it on off-camber.
How to do it: zip-tie or clamp to the tube, drivers facing outward or slightly down. Put something between the box and the tube - a strip of foam or rubber - or the whole cage becomes a resonator and you'll hear rattle.
Best pairing: a Mini at 52 g or a receiver-powered Double at 65 g.
Inside the body - the scale look
For anyone chasing a clean scale build, hiding the speaker inside the body shell is the goal.
What you lose: volume, and a bit of Bluetooth range. A polycarbonate shell is not acoustically transparent.
How to make it work: cut or drill an opening in the shell directly in front of the drivers. Even a modest vent recovers most of the top end you'd otherwise lose. Window openings, grille openings and bed-to-cab gaps all work as escape paths. A speaker firing at bare lexan will sound muffled no matter how good it is.
Best pairing: the Micro Single at 37 x 28.5 x 20.5 mm fits places nothing else does, and at 25 g it won't upset a light body.
Chassis-mounted - the last resort
Under the chassis or between the rails is the worst place acoustically. The drivers are pointing at the ground or into a rail, the box collects mud and water, and everything above it is blocking the sound.
Only worth doing if there's genuinely nowhere else, and if you do, get the drivers facing sideways and outward rather than down.
Keep it away from your receiver antenna
This one's worth its own section because it causes problems people misdiagnose.
Your RC transmitter runs on 2.4 GHz. So does Bluetooth. Mounting the speaker directly against the receiver box, or running the receiver antenna along the speaker enclosure, puts two 2.4 GHz radios in the same few centimetres.
Leave at least six inches between the speaker and the receiver antenna, and route the antenna away from the speaker rather than alongside it. It won't affect your control link - RC radios frequency-hop specifically to survive this - but it will cost you Bluetooth range. More on that in real-world Bluetooth range on the trail.
Cable routing for receiver-powered models
Receiver-powered speakers ship with a 110 mm cable. Route it away from your ESC power wires where you can, secure it so it can't get caught in a driveshaft or steering link, and leave a small service loop so the connector isn't under tension when the chassis flexes.
