How Much Does Speaker Weight Actually Change How Your Crawler Drives?

If you build crawlers, you already treat weight as a design problem. Brass knuckles low, battery forward, everything heavy as close to the axles as you can get it. So it's a fair question: does bolting a speaker to your rig undo any of that?

Short answer: the number on the scale matters less than where you put it.

The numbers in context

A built 1/10 crawler typically lands somewhere between 1.8 kg and 2.6 kg ready to run. Our lineup spans 25 g to 165 g. So the heaviest speaker we make is around 6 to 9 percent of the vehicle's mass, and the lightest is well under 1.5 percent.

For comparison, a set of brass portal covers can add 200 to 400 g, and people fit those deliberately to improve how a rig climbs. Weight isn't automatically bad on a crawler. Weight in the wrong place is.

Height is what actually matters

Crawlers roll over sideways because the centre of gravity gets outside the contact patch of the downhill wheels. Adding mass low pulls the CG down and makes the rig more stable. Adding mass high pushes it up and makes the rig tippier on off-camber.

The practical consequence: 100 g in the bed is a very different thing from 100 g on the roof. The same speaker can be a non-event or a genuine handling change depending on where it lands.

Rough guide for a 1/10 crawler:

  • Bed floor, between the axles. Almost no effect on off-camber stability, even at 165 g. This is the good spot.
  • Bed, but up on the rails. Noticeable above roughly 100 g on steep side-hills.
  • Roll cage, mid-height. Fine up to about 85 g. Above that you'll feel it.
  • Roof or roof rack. This is the worst place for mass. Keep it under 50 g unless you're specifically running a rig with a low CG to spare.

Front to back matters too

Weight behind the rear axle acts on a lever. It lightens the front end, which costs you steering authority on climbs and can make the rig want to loop over backwards on a steep ascent.

Mounting a heavy speaker at the very back of a bed is the most common version of this mistake. Moving the same speaker 60 mm forward, so it sits over or ahead of the rear axle line, largely removes the effect.

So which speaker should you actually get?

Think about it as a budget rather than a limit.

Competition or hard scale crawling, tight CG budget: stay at or under 85 g and mount it low. The Single at 32 g, the Mini at 52 g, or a receiver-powered Double at 65 g all disappear into the build.

Trail crawling and general bashing: anything in the lineup is fine if it goes in the bed. The Quad is a good pick here because it's only 33 mm tall, so it sits low in a bed rather than stacking upward.

Show rigs and cruisers: weight is irrelevant, take the Overkill.

1/24 and 1/18 builds: this matters more, not less, because the vehicle is lighter. A 25 g Micro Single on a 400 g 1/24 rig is over 6 percent of the mass. Stay small and stay low.

The one thing people get wrong

Mounting the speaker high because it sounds better up there. It does sound marginally better with a clear path out, but the handling cost on a crawler isn't worth it. A speaker in the bed with the drivers facing up and out gets you most of the projection with none of the CG penalty.

If you want the sound higher without the weight higher, go up a model size and keep it low. A Supreme Single in the bed will out-project a Single on the roof, and your rig will still climb.
